Assegaai Trails is a multi-faceted nature reserve situated in the heart of the Eastern Cape on the R343 between Grahamstown and Kenton-on-Sea. Offering over 100 beds in various accommodation options, from delightful rustic hiking camps and affordable group accommodation, to comfortable self-catering cottages. The quaint little stone Chapel, or the outdoor gazebo under a sprawling old wild fig, combined with a fully equipped reception hall, makes for the perfect wedding venue. This serves also as a tranquil ‘retreat’ centre for Church groups, while the abundance of accommodation and activities are ideal for corporate or student conferencing and team-building. With over 35km of hiking trails, wonderful birding opportunities , the Assegaai River, and plenty of game, Assegaai Trails is a must for the outdoor enthusiast.

Scenic Hiking Trails
Assegaai Trails offer a range of scenic hiking trails full of natural resources including Diverse flora and fauna, Interesting rock formations, Various species of indigenous buck – bushbuck, duiker, grysbok and rhebuck. You may also see monkeys, baboons, wild pig and warthog, and if you are very lucky, you might even see a porcupine or antbear. Giraffe, zebra and various species of antelope have been introduced to the farm …
‘Assegaai Trails’ originated over a glass of wine in about June of 1999. A suggestion was made to create a hiking trail on the farm to be able to easily access and enjoy all the beautiful spots. This sounded like a good idea, and soon branches and loppers were flying in every direction, and many hours were spent plotting the first trail. Then, to our surprise, what had begun as a project just for our own enjoyment, created more interest than we had ever anticipated, and soon many hikers were walking the trails …
